I was so excited when this episode was released! I totally agree with you Paroma about When the Phone Rings. The first episode threw me off because I thought it was going to be too tropey. I was so close to dropping it but something kept calling me back LOL. I'm dying to hear your thoughts on the ending (!!!)
I might be one of the few who enjoyed The Trunk. This year there weren't many romances that gripped me (hence I was starved of this genre and answered accordingly for the Goguma Awards), but Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun Jin's chemistry really stood out and came out as my top favorite couple of 2024, with Jo Jung Seok and Shin Se Kyung's pairing in Captivating the King coming in at a close second.
I thought their chemistry was excellent too - I just wish the drama had given us more of a romance between them. But maybe we'll see them reunite at sometime in a happier story. I didn't get a chance to watch much of Captivating the King, but I agree that Shin Se-kyung and Jo Jung-seok had INCREDIBLE chemistry in it.
I filled the google form and I loved the question, which Drama job you wished you had. Really clever quirky and funny options. Though again haven't watched any of the dramas in the list and I don't wish I had any job, but all time travel dramas make me wanna go back to 2011 and buy bitcoin :D . Make up your own category is missing from the form this year?
I will add mine, the most deceptive Title..The Trunk..(well the trunk had some symbolism I guess but man I was thinking the Trunk would play a major role)
I love this. The Trunk kept me so confused for most of its runtime cause I couldn't understand why it was important enough to BE THE TITLE. 🙈
We had to limit the number of fill in the blanks submissions because things got out of hand last year. 😅 But we'll revisit the decision next year since you guys seem to like making up your own.
As someone who avoids any extra work, I totally understand. May be next year, do not circulate a google form and then collate results etc. Rather engage this substack space with polls(i donno what features it has). Do not spend time in collating listeners inputs, thats too much work(I donno know how you did it past few years given you have so many commitments on your time)..We are here to listen to your expert opinions, while junta's inputs are fun but not at the cost of too much work on your part..just a thought..
That's a good idea for the future. Once we have this substack built up enough. There are basically two advantages to doing it on forms right now: first, we can ask a lot of questions at the same time and second, it's accessible to everyone and not just signed up subscribers here. But yeah we're always looking out for alternatives that'll make our lives easier. 😄 We also just like getting a sense of how you guys experienced the year in dramas. So eventually if substack polls give us that, that's what we'll go for. 👌
Trunk-And then Netflix Instagram handle making cute comparisons with Goblin via the clip of the one date they had! And those clips highlighted how great the hair was on Goblin Vs the Trunk character! (how do I add rofl emoji here?) :D😂( i just figured out you right, click on emoji option and it gives you a menu of emojis! I feel old)
Paroma, you are right spot on with the no facial expressions in Trunk! What a waste of Gong yoo!! He literally had the same blank depressive look the entire drama!
It was a crime, right?! I got the feeling in some scenes where Gong Yoo's natural expressiveness peeked out that the PD must have called cut and told him to rein it in. He seemed to be struggling the most. 🙈😅
Enjoyed this episode so much, thank you. These were the exact dramas that I've been hesitating to try but still felt curious about. One of my favorite things about your podcast and this community is hearing/remembering how to try new shows, keep a critical lens, and still find ways to enjoy them. (Or, just drop them haha.)
Tangent but - one of the first Dramas Over Flowers episodes I ever heard included criticism of Lee Min-ho in The King - and I felt like this was the podcast for me haha.
Also, I loved the new questions for the Goguma Awards, like the ones on our watching preferences. 🎉
Thank you for telling us that, Katerina! Anisa is so much better than me or Saya about dropping dramas that are not working. Whereas I stay stubbornly hopeful until I can't make any excuses any more. 😅 But happily we have the podcast to let off steam after our suffering. Also thank you for filling the survey! We just recorded the first of (probably) three year end episodes!
It’s interesting, I absolutely loved Melo Movie, including its soundtrack, while My Beloved Summer fell kind of flat for me. I recognize some of the flaws you noted though somehow those didn’t matter to me because it captured complicated emotions in such an honest and beautiful way. But I appreciate your perspective and this just shows that YMMV!

I definitely have thoughts about that ending. I'm just trying to figure out if my outrage outweighs my relief that they did get an HEA. 🤣

Hahaha yeah the trunk was basically a MacGuffin, had no real impact on the plot!

Poor Gong Yoo. First they wouldn't let him unleash him full charm and then they made him sport that hair. ALSO I NEEDED MORE DATES! Pffft.
